Throughout the History of Art there has not been one example of such high artistic value as singular and rare as the Jugs of the Alhambra. Only 6 of them have survived in museums scattered all over the world, bearing witness to the refined and noble culture that built the Alhambra Palace. Saving an Alhambra Vase from oblivion is similar to giving life back to an unrepeatable and sublime treasure. Miguel Ruiz does this through technical and esthetic maturity tackling this particular challenge using his knowledge as an expert potter. After 28 years of laborious and devoted investigation into the hidden and almost alchemical processes used by artisans between the 10th and 15th centuries, he has remade these ceramic monuments. The constant vigilance of the drying out and assembly phases can take days, even months, until its graceful shape of the jug is established. Then the first phase of enamelling follows: the whites and blues are triumphantly decorated with golden borders. Miguel Ruiz has had to carry out countless stages of meticulous reproduction; entablature cartography, palm leaf decorations, Moorish spurs and intrigate religious calligraphy. The gold applied by his steady hand slowly blends, draws out and highlights the meticulous designs. One particular piece, the Gazelles Jug went on to represent Granada in the Andalusian Pavillion at Expo´92 (Seville, Spain). As well as the 6 replica jugs, the collection also includes 3 original pieces created by Miguel Ruiz.
